Breast Mammogram
A Breast Mammogram is a specific type of imaging that uses a low dose X-ray system and high contrast, high resolution film for examination of the breasts. Mammography plays a central role for early detection because breast tumors can be detected up to two years before they can be felt. Three Common Types of Breast Mammograms: Screening Mammogram An annual mammogram for patients with no breast symptoms or complaints. If a problem is seen, the patient will be asked to return for additional views. Otherwise, the results of screening mammograms are usually mailed to both the patient and their primary care provider. Less than 10% of screening mammograms are called back for additional evaluation. Comprehensive Screening Mammogram These breast mammograms are performed on patients with prior history of breast cancer (more than 3 years), strong family history, high risk or who travel a long distance for their exam. The mammograms are reviewed and typically double checked before the patient leaves the Center, providing same-day results. Diagnostic Mammogram This type of mammogram is done when there are suspicious findings on a routine screening mammogram, or when a patient has a breast complaint (lump, thickening, nipple discharge, swelling, etc.) The radiologist reviews all diagnostic mammograms. Additional views and/or an ultrasound may be necessary. All results are discussed with the patients. PREPARING FOR A MAMMOGRAM Once the decision to have a mammogram is made, the following preparation for the exam is recommended: * Try to schedule it during the week after your period if your breasts are tender before your period. * Wear clothing easily removed from the waist up, since a gown will be provided for the exam. * Do not use deodorant, powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts as they can show up on the mammogram and confuse the interpretation of the image. * Provide the Breast Center with the location of all previous mammograms to assure comparison at the time of your exam. Mammograms are like fingerprints; all patients are unique, therefore comparison films are extremely helpful to appreciate interval changes.
